Learning Curves (Harlequin Temptation, No. 863)

A steamy read!
Madeline Watson wants to study human-mating rituals...and who better to study with than her good pal Cal Turner. But Cal can't have a scandal, and a scandal is just what he'll have if word gets out he's dating a grad student. There's too much at stake to risk. But maybe there's too much at stake not to?

Joanne Rock writes a steamy story with "real" people who will not only delight you, but move you!

A wonderful romantic comedy!
Maybe it's the setting, my alma mater--the University of Louisville campus--but I felt right at home with these characters. A hunk trying to live a responsible life and a responsible bookworm trying to break free of her image. It's an academic experiment that quickly runs out of control. I'll never look at a car wash again without thinking of this book! Joanne Rock is one fine writer, one to watch.

Loved this book!
Cal and Maddie's story snagged my attention from page one and held it all the way through a one-sitting read. What an awesome story with great characters! Cal's sister Allison is esepcially fun with her mall addiction. Joanne Rock stories are now definitely on my auto-buy list!

For the insane...
This book was perfect for me, but I'm insane. For those of us who like to live life a little to the left, this book will inspire in you a new person, and reawaken faith you didn't know you had in things you didn't know existed. Rob Brezsny is my hero.

whoa...
This was an amazing book. I laughed, I cried. I died. It was sweet. This book inspired change in my life, made me smile, made me cry. It was spellbinding and fascinating all the way through - I was glued to each chapter.

I liked what Robert Anton Wilson said:

"A book so wierd it just might drive you stark raving sane."

Try it!

is god a woman?
This book will change your life, if you're into that sort of thing... Rob is a true visionary of our time. He has single handedly (or perhaps with divine intervention) offered the Dead Sea scrolls of the 21st century. True spirituality and the path to enlightenment comes from your funny bone not that somber dark place we have all been so brainwashed into accepting. This essential exercise manual for the dying parts of your gray matter is written in a stylish vernacular that seems to effortlessly roll off the eyeballs... Now, is God a woman? Let's hope so! :)

Two for the Summit: My Daughter, the Mountains, and Me
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (03 August, 2000)
Author: Geoffrey Norman
Average review score:

Heart-warming Story about Father and Daughter who Climb
Geoffrey Norman, This heartwarming book is about the author's experience mountain climbing with his daughter, Brooke. First, they climb the Grand Teton in Wyoming, which Geoffrey gives himself as a present for his 50th birthday. Climbing together becomes an activity that bonds them together as Brooke goes through adolescence and Geoffrey goes through the midlife passage. Norman, a writer for Outside Magazine, shares both his physical and psychological feelings with the reader. He also describes the climbing culture and gives us armchair adventurers a better idea of why people risk their lives for recreation. The book makes you feel like he is sitting down and telling you a story.

Life, Mountains, and Kids
This is a very good book by an editor approaching 50 who decides a mountain climb is just what he needs to prove he's not over the hill. This gets more complicated when his 15 year old daughter decides she'd like to give it a try. Now in addition to his own insecurities, he must confront his relationship with his daughter as she moves to the age where she starts to separate from her parents but also must address the many insecurities that come with growing up. If you are buying this book for a climbing adventure only, this is the wrong book. But if you want detailed climbing info from beginner to the ascent of a continental summit, maybe this will satisfy you.

This book really shines describing his family relationships and watching his young daughter grow into an independent woman. Read this book if you climb or like climbing stories. But more importantly read this book to explore interpersonal relationships with your kids.

Wonderfully Refreshing and Real
Certainly not just another climbing book. Geoffrey Norman paints the human faces with the fine touch of an artist. "Two for the Summit" was one of the most delightful books I've read in a long time. It gently probes the relationship between parent and child as each grows wiser and richer through their shared experiences on the mountain. An interesting and gripping book about real people striving for the highest points in life.

The question "Why do we climb?" has been answered with as many different twists as it has been asked. However, I suspect most of us that climb do it to look inward as much as we do to see the beauty from the summit. Norman shares his personal glimpses of life with family and mountain in a wonderfully refreshing way.

The Who: Concert File
Published in Paperback by Omnibus Press (January, 1998)
Authors: Joe McMichael, Jack Lyons, Irish Jack Lyons, and Irish Jack
Average review score:

The Who's amazing journey 1963 - 1997
I really enjoyed this book. Especially the great photos included.
I bought my copy in London, so it was nice to travel parts of London and see a few places where they actually played! But it's really only for die hard fans of the band (like myself, I guess). Also interesting are the set lists to the shows they played.
I'm no good at writing reviews, but I'll highly recommend this one. It's worth the price. A thanks to Irish Jack and Joe McMichael for making it.

And of course The Who. The greatest band in the world.

The Who's Playbook
If you get an opportunity to see The Who (now on tour - summer/fall 2000) please do so. Other than Bruce Springsteen, they are without peer on stage. This book does a fine job of detailing Who gigs from the early 1960's (as the Detours)to the 1996-1997 Quadrophenia tour. The authors recap the songs, the stage "happenings" (smashed guitars, onstage feuds, etc.)and other "Odds & Sods". It's kind of like a baseball box score for Who fans! If you're already a Who fan (or are an aspiring one) this is THE book for you!

The essential Who book
The Who from '69-'76 were considered the greatest live rock band. That reputation has placed them in an all-time status. As long as the Who had Keith Moon and John Entwistle, they had the best rhythm section in rock music. The book documents every Who concert through the spring of '97. This book contains everything significant, it's a great read with excellent concert photos. The most interesting read is how the Who blew Led Zeppelin off the stage at the Merriweather Post Pavillion on May 25, 1969. My favorite live Zep period yet the Who had the upper hand.

Abba: The Book
Published in Hardcover by Aurum Pr Ltd (September, 1900)
Author: Jean-Marie Potiez
Average review score:

THEY CAME, THEY SANG...AND THEY CONQUERED!
Did you ever come across a favourite song and say, "I wonder whatever happened to....? Abba took the world by storm back in the 60's when a quarter bought you an afternoon matinee at the movies, and minimum wage in my home town was $1.00 per hour. If you earned $1.25 or more, you had it made!

Abba possessed a unique blend of charisma, talent, and originality. Who can forget the sentimental lyrics of ,"I Had A Dream", the gentle flow of "The Rivers of Babylon", the melancholy strains of "Fernando" or the upbeat dance-hit, "Dancing Queen"? The list of hits went on and on.

What I particularly liked about this book was the numerous photographs all depicting Abba at their finest. Many photographs are ones not often, if ever, published before, at least not on this continent. In addition, the book reveals a lot of factual, personal information about the individuals themselves. The road to fame and fortune is not an easy one as readers will discover through the pages of this book. Some facts have been printed before, but other aspects of their career are presented here in a more complete, in-depth light. Fans of Abba, will no longer need to wonder, "what ever happened to..." because the epilogue tells you just that. Of all the books on the group, this is one of the best in print.

Well done coverage of the early years
This book covers mainly the early years of ABBA's career. Most of the pictures we have seen before, but never in one place and packaged so nicely. The pictures here are different than the ones you will find in "From ABBA to Mamma Mia", so if you want to have a collection of pictures spanning ABBA's entire career, you really need to own both.

absolutely excellent
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK! FROM BEGGINING TO END! WONDERFUL PHOTOS, FUNNY ANECDOTES, INTERESTING NOTES, QUOTATIONS, INTIMATE FEELINGS PARTICULARLY FROM FRIDA, ETC. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANY ABBA FAN IN THE WORLD. I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT IT, PLEASE DONT TAKE LONG TO BUY ONE, IT IS WORTH THE MONEY, IT IS A TREASURE IF YOU ARE AN ABBA FAN. TWO FINGERS UP !! LOVE TO ALL CLAUDIO

The Heavy Guitar Bible: A Rock Guitar Instruction Manual
Published in Paperback by Cherry Lane Music (December, 1986)
Author: Richard Daniels
Average review score:

The Best Beginer "Rock Guitar" Book
This easy to read, well thought out guidebook to electric guitar playing is a true revelation to the begining guitarist.
The author organizes his lesson plan perfectly, showing how the primary major and minor scales are layed out on the guitar fretboard. Not only will you get the usual "here they are" dot matrix diagrams, you are also presented with a unique way to visualize and dissect these scales that allows for quicker memory uptake when it comes to key transposition. In other words, the author's insights on guitar fretboard logic are well worth the price.
Added info on attaining and sustaining technique, tone, and style while playing the modern electric guitar and amplifier makes this a must read for anyone having a love affair with their axe.

the holy bible of guitar
i picked this book up almost 20 yrs ago that's hard to believe, and i'm living proof this book really works if you apply yourself to it (...). this is for those folks who don't really care about the theory thing or learning songs per say or reading music. but it is very geared to the person who wants to learn to play the guitar by feel, very easy to understand anyone can sit down with this book and learn the lessons, you WILL get out of this book exactly what you put into it and that's a promise i can say. very well written easy to understand terms for the beginer as well as the professional guitarist. i find myself constantley refering back to it just to freshen my skills. if you really want to learn this is the holy bible for the guitarist
richard lee wilson

It is The One
Bought this book 10 years ago and it proved to be the best guitar book for any blues or rock interested newbie. Wonderfully written in style, approach, even the fonts and graphics. Not a huge book, but it has the essence...and teaches it very, very effectively.

Alas, lost my copy after loaning to my son (who learned even quicker BTW and quickly passed me), especially as my time to play diminished.

Recently I wanted to reteach myself, and sought out this book...was aghast! at the fact that it is out of print...Luckily, got one of the last new ones (thru amazon). Just as good now as it was then...possibly better as I have seen in the intervening years how few 'teaching' books attain this level.

I shall cherish it for it's own value, and the memories, forever.

Net: Highly, highly, highly recommended....a great achievement by the author worthy of note on his tombstone some day...

The Music of George Harrison : While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Published in Hardcover by Firefly Publishing (March, 2003)
Author: Simon Leng
Average review score:

Try Some, Buy Some - I Want to Tell You to Buy this Book!
This book is truly a masterpiece and will delight all readers, from the inveterate George Harrison fans to people just becoming familiar with his works. Leng has a real flair for written expression and research. His extensive knowledge of Eastern music and how Harrison incorporated Eastern styles into his music enrich this work. Leng offers extensive coverage to people who influenced the late guitarist such as Klaus Voorman, an artist who had known George since the inception of the Beatles and who later drew the 1966 album cover for "Revolver," pianist John Barhman and Ravi Shankar, the man who taught George to play the sitar.

Leng plainly respects the intelligence of his readers and his writing is clear, clean and crisp. There is no extraneous matter. Leng has a gift for piquing the interest and curiosity of readers. In reading this, one wants to know more about John Barham and the other people who influenced George Harrison. Leng's work is expansive; he excites interest and curiosity in an almost "ripple" effect form; each person named in his book "interlocks" in the way they influenced George Harrison. It is this approach that maintains readers' interest. Leng has researched his information well and his respect for George and the many people who influenced him and his art comes through plainly in this work. I like the way Leng accepts and acknowledges George, warts and all and the musical analysis he provides in this work.

The writing's on the wall - try some, buy some and please try and buy this book! This is a superior work!

Thanks to Simon Leng
Simon Leng's book not only provides wonderful insight to George Harrison's music, but manages to do so in a thoughtful, informed and unbiased manner. Leng's knowledge of Indian music and its application in Harrison's work is particularly welcome in light of the many critics, Iam MacDonald in particular, who overlooked Harrison's talents in their haste to credit the Beatles' success to the genius of John Lennon. In addition, Leng refutes much of the criticism heaped on Harrison's work in light of commentary given by musicians who toured with Harrison and documentary footage of live performances. Even so, Leng never excuses all of Harrison's shortcomings nor forgets to acknowledge his indebtedness to other artists.
This is a very enjoyable book, and one could only wish Leng had been able to include material on Brainwashed and the Concert for George given in his honor at Albert Hall. The inclusion of drawings by George's longtime friend and fellow musician Klaus Voorman are a wonderful addition. Read this work near your stereo, and have ready George's "I, Me, Mine" for additional reference.

Possibly the best book yet on George Harrison
I agree with the praise given this book by other Amazon reviewers, but would like to add a few points. First, Simon Leng discusses Harrison's musical relationship with pianist, composer & arranger John Barham, ranging from George's first interest in the sitar through their work on Ravi Shankar's "Chants of India" album. I would like to read more about Barham. Secondly, the book gains quite a bit from Klaus Voorman's involvement. Voorman is the artist and bass player who met the Beatles in Hamburg, produced the covers for "Revolver" and the Anthology CDs and played on Harrison's early solo albums. Voorman also contributed two nice sketches of George for this book. There are extensive quotes from others, including Doris Troy and David Bromberg (the latter of whom, although very insightful, may be quoted a bit too much considering his brief acquaintance with Harrison). This book may be the best available work on George Harrison.

The book is truly written from the heart and has much unique information in it. There are many unusual lifts and training methods in it since the author shares his personal experiences (and experiments). One cannot help but learn from the book. Even those with no interest in building great strength will enjoy the book.

One of the Best!

This book is way better than 99.9% of the others out there. If you were to get four books I would get this, Olympic Weightlifting Encyclopedia, Russian Kettlebell Challenge and Mastery of Hand Strength. That is all you need. Ever.

The Rock of Anzio: From Sicily to Dachau: A History of the 45th Infantry Division
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (November, 1999)
Author: Flint Whitlock
Average review score:

A Thourough Review of a Battleworthy Infantry Division
The Rock of Anzio chronicles the WW II experience of the 45th Division, a national guard unit primarily from OK, TX, and NM. This covers prewar status, the callup to federal duty, and its' prodigious battle action in Sicily, Italy including Anzio, France, and Germany. Personal remembrances of former thunderbirds (the divisions' nickname) are widely used as well as the divisional history. Far from being a dry accounting of the divisions' exploits, this book is very easily read, with many small details well covered as well as the overall strategic situation the division was facing at that time. I personally wasn't aware of the critical defense of Anzio by the thunderbirds. Battle actions are well written and exciting to read. I would recommend this book to anyone with a special interest in the Italian campaign and it is a excellent companion book to Edwin Hoyt's Backwater War.

Thought Provoking
My late grandfather was a Thunderbird (157th rgmt, M co), and seldom talked of his World War Two days. After reading this book, I now know why. I can only imagine what it must have been like to live for days on end in a wet foxhole, always cold and miserable. Only have the faintest idea of what horrors he saw when Dachau was liberated. The stories of those days were never told by him. As with many men of his generation, he did not want to remember those terrible events of nearly sixty years ago. _The Rock of Anzio_ tells the story that my grandfather was never able to tell, a story that should be told.

Interesting look at a National Guard Division
I really enjoyed this book. It moved so well, and kept my interest from cover to cover. I have read many unit histories, and this work is the most complete. It cover the unit from activation, through all of its battles. Anzio and Dachau must get the highest praise. Anzio is written so well, I can hardly see how the US prevailed in that battle. I also never knew of the conflict between the Thunderbirds (45th ID) and the Rainbows (42nd ID), over the liberation of the Dachau Concentration camp (even having visited it). The author does a great job, buy this book!
